At the end of November 2018, we published a feature on TNS Futsal’s Lee Phelan, who had been called up to the Great Britain squad. Now that he has returned from his European adventures, we caught up with him to see how his Italian job panned out.
“I played in all three matches and had plenty of game time with the small squad,” he began, before continuing, “However, I should have been in hospital after the first game against France, when their keeper came for a cross, punched my head and broke his wrist.”
Following the drama in the France match, it was a more positive headline as far as Lee was concerned in the final fixture. “I managed to score in the last game against Switzerland; this was a very proud moment indeed. I could have had a few more but for the keeper pulling off some great saves.”
Summing up the trip, Lee commented that, “The level was very good but that was to be expected, as futsal is massive in their respective countries. I was very happy with my own performance, considering there were three games in less than twenty four hours. I would say that the game against Italy was probably my best. There was a great team spirit and both players and staff were a top set of lads.”
The results were as follows: France (lost 2-3). Italy (lost 3-13). Switzerland (lost 6-8). The hosts, Italy, went on to win the tournament.
