Exercise Referral Programme

Exercise on Referral

The New Saints FC Foundation works in partnership with the Healthy Shropshire initiative to provide exercise on referral via GP surgeries.

The programme is designed for patients with varying health problems with specialised exercise sessions to combat illness. Some of the illnesses which benefit from the programme include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Lower back pain
  • Bone and joint problems
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  •  COPD
  • Asthma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress

Patients are referred to us via an appointment with their GP. A wellness consultation is the next stage of the process and is followed by a 10 week block of individual sessions.

Our success Stories………

Meet Alan………..

Alan suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, also known as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), an inherited, degenerative nerve disorder that causes muscle weakness and atrophy in the feet, legs, hands, and forearms. CMT disease is characterised by progressive loss of use and sensation in the limbs.

“Greetings from North Shropshire with a few words to describe a local facility and the work being done to keep a patient with CMT, mobile. The organisation is called The Venue and is based on the outskirts of Oswestry and is home of Welsh Premier league football champions The New Saints.”

“The gymnasium which is well equipped and expertly run by Naomi Stocker a graduate physical instructor ex Glyndwr University. She deals with GP physical referral patients of all types including CMT.”

“This is carried out on a well regulated and managed programme tailored to individual needs. The atmosphere is relaxed and provides a good social atmosphere for patients.”

“My association with the gym and managed set circuit programmes has been one of maintaining and hopefully improving mobility. The idea of improving wasted lower leg and foot performance was daunting but with Naomi’s persistence over the last 3 years it has shown improvements.”

“Currently I am battling with balancing deficiencies and being persuaded to walk in figure 8s in the gym walkways. Needless to say all exercise benefits are derived from consistent application. I do twice a week, one hour sessions each and 2 hours in a comfortable armchair.”

Meet Heather……..

Heather joined us 3 years ago following 2 knee replacements, lower back fusion amongst other complications and a sedentary lifestyle due to ailing health.

The transformation for Heather has been outstanding. On starting the programme, she was unable to bend her knees which of course affected her mobility. Heather now performs 40 minutes interval training on the rower, walking lunches to name just a few advanced exercises and is a staggering 5 stone lighter. Heather has also significantly lowered her blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Meet Joan…….

Joan attends the gym twice per week and completes a mixture of cardiovascular and resistance exercises. Her programme is tailored to enhance mobility and to help with ADL’s such as carrying shopping and walking her dog. Joan has reduced her blood pressure and is taking advantage of her weight loss by purchasing a pedometer and being more physically active away from the gym setting.

A message from the instructor…….

“Exercise needn’t be daunting. In fact when you start to feel the real benefits of a sustained exercise programme you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner. Its a real pleasure for me to see my patients improve their ailments, mobility, physical strength and appearance through their hard work and dedication.”

“Bearing in mind that many of the people who come though our doors are suffering with their ailments, with daily pain and struggle, its really quite staggering to see how hard they work taking that into consideration.”

“Our aim is to introduce a safe, tailored experience allowing patients to safely progress to their personal aims and goals. Whether it be to walk a few steps further, reach the shops without having to find the nearest bench on the way or simply to feel stronger.”
