The New Saints Ladies Started their Season in The FA Women’s Premier League, Division One Midland, with a win over also newly promoted Long Eaton Ladies, at Foxen Manor. The Squad had seen some additional players signing for the Saints during the summer months, with Lia Lewis and Del Morgan gaining starting places for the inaugural Premier League match. Emma Rodden who played last year for the reserves, also got a start and sixteen year old Charlotte Budd made her competitive debut for the ladies.
The game started with the opposition enjoying the majority of the play and in the nineteenth minute they were rewarded with a goal, when a through ball split the two Saints center halves leaving their forward one on one with Delyth Morgan in goal, the ball was slotted past the keeper to give the visitors the lead. Four minutes later saw sixteen year old Charlotte Budd, making her debut for the Ladies first team, a throw in by Louisa Anderson, the Long Eaton Rosemary Hayles played the ball across the eighteen yard box, striker Charlotte Budd nipped in and on her second touch fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the box. Long Eaton again took the lead in the forty second minute when a mistake on the left hand side of the pitch saw the ball passed to the feet of their player who ran on a one on one with the out rushing Saints keeper, the player avoided her and slotted the ball towards goal where Kate Huntbach lying on the floor attempted to head the ball out, before Sophie Davies kicked the ball away only to hit Nic Walford and the ball rebounded into the goal to give the visitors a half time lead.
The second half saw the Saints come out with new determination, and after just thirty one second they found themselves level once again, Charlotte Budd won the ball back off Rosmary Hayles, before Sophie Davies’s cross meet Laura Morris who fired her shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Less than two minutes later a clearance from the Long Eaton defender was met by Lia Lewis who played a one two with Emma Roden before releasing a powerful strike from thirty yards that beat the keeper at her near post. The Saints then found themselves two goals clear. A Charlotte Budd corner from the left hand side on the sixty second minute was whipped into the middle of the box where the resulting ball was headed home by Louisa Anderson. The Saints then finished the game strongly when a free kick just inside the Long Eaton half taken by Chloe Wilkinson found its way to Charlotte Budd who controlled the ball before twisting and turning round the Long Eaton defenders and firing past the keeper to score her second of the game to seal a historic win for the Shropshire side.
After the game ladies manager Peter Wilson commented, “We made hard work of the game in the first half but the application and effort of every player second half saw us get our first win at this level”.
“Obviously, when we have performed like we have, to single out a player isn’t always best, but anyone that saw today would talk about Charlotte Budd. Being sixteen and being able to play the way she did takes some beating, scoring two just topped off that performance and we hope she can now push on to keep that starting place as we move on through the season”.
