The New Saints Ladies overcame a strong Wolverhampton Wanderers sides at Hendsford Town Football Club to take in their fifth fixture in The FA Women’s Premier League Division one Midland match.
The Saints starting line up saw one change from the side that had beaten Sporting Khalsa Ladies just three days previously, Charlotte Budd was replaced by Emma Roden.
The first half saw The Saints playing into the sun on a very bright and warm Sunday afternoon, both team having half chances on goal until the first real chance for either team fell for the visitors. Charlotte Canlett with a very powerful shot from forty yards out side the box saw the Wolves Keeper tip the ball over the cross bar. This saw the Shropshire side start to control the game and seemed to be the turning point of the game as The Saints grew in confidence attacking the Wolves goal, half time saw the teams go in as neither were able to get on the score sheet.
The second half started from a Saints kick off which saw the ball passed back to a before the ball found its way to Chloe Wilkinson on the left hand side, her pass reached Emily Ridge who set to Charlotte Canlett. Canlett twisted around an on coming Wolves player before her long pass through to Emily Ridge who with one of her pacy runs, skipped passed the defenders and lobbed the out rushing keeper which saw the ball roll over the line in the right hand corner of the net. The Saints ladies looked full of confidence and just nine minutes later and Emma Roden was brought down inside the Wolves box, after turning to her left and about to release a shot on goal before being brought down, the Referee pointed to the spot,. Charlotte Canlett calmly stepped up blasting the ball past the goalkeeper to ripple the back of the net. Wolves looked nervy after the second goal and the Shropshire side looked to punnish this. On the sixty fourth minute a long ball over the Wolves defence was then played back to the Wolves goalkeeper who played out to her left back. The left back was pressed very quickly by Emma Roden, seeing her first time back pass intercepted by Emily Ridge, who ran in to take the ball from the goalkeepers feet and slot the ball across goal into the far corner to give the Saints a three nil lead. The remainder of the game became more tense as the time went on with Wolves trying their hardest to break down the Saints defence which held firm, Sarah Burke and Nic Walford were brought on to help in midfield as the minutes ticked by seemingly very slowly for the visitors, the final whistle saw the relief and adulation of both the Player, Management Staff and Supporters of The New Saints Ladies, seeing their third win in the league and second in just three days.
After the match Manager Peter Wilson commented, “The players have given everything and more today. We needed to be disciplined as we know what Wolves are capable of but we more than matched them today”.
“Everyone is pleased with the performance but we’ve now got to take that forward to the Steel City game in two weeks where we go in search for another win”.
