TNS Ladies’ Winning Streak Comes To An End Against Lincoln City Women

LINCOLN CITY WOMEN 5-2 THE NEW SAINTS LADIES FA WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 MIDLANDS PLAYED AT LINCOLN UNITED FC, ASHBY AVENUE, LINCOLN SUNDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2019

MATCH REPORT BY DAVID FIGG

After taking their winning run to 5 games with a 5-1 away league win over Leicester United Women the previous Sunday, The New Saints Ladies crashed to a 2-5 defeat at Lincoln City Women in their FA Women’s National League Division 1 Midlands clash at Lincoln United’s Ashby Avenue ground on Sunday.

Saints’ win over Leicester and results elsewhere the same day had left them in 2nd place in the table as the second of 3 teams all on 12 points, with leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers Ladies ahead on goal difference and Long Eaton Ladies in 3rd place.

Meanwhile, Lincoln went into the game in 8th place out of 12 in the table with their most recent result being a 1-2 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion Ladies in the FA Women’s National League Plate 2nd round the previous Sunday.

The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute, when Katy Thornley’s low ball infield from the right found Abbie Murrell, who controlled before laying it back to Thornley on the right.  Her first time cross bounced just outside the 6 yard box at the far post, where Tia Johnson fired her low first time right foot shot on the turn from 6 yards past Saints’ keeper Beth Cleveley into  her right hand corner.

It was 2-0 in the 31st minute when Thornley’s through ball on the right of middle found Johnson. Saints’ defender Lucy Brown missed her challenge inside the box and after Johnson had continued her run before firing her right foot shot against Cleveley’s right hand post, the rebound ran out to Johnson who slotted her left foot shot from 6 yards from the left hand corner of the 6 yard box into the middle of the net.

It was 3-0 in the 50th minute when Amy Hunt’s cross from the right to the near post found Murrell, who fired her first time right foot shot from 6 yards into Cleveley’s right hand corner.

It was 4-0 in the 59th minute when Chloe Brock-Taylor’s long ball over the top down the left Murrell who ran on into the left side of the box and beat Caitlyn smith before squeezing her low right foot shot from the left hand corner of the 6 yard box between Cleveley and the near post into her right hand corner.

Lincoln made their first change in the 60th minute when Erin Wilson came on to replace Jeorgia Carr.

Saints made a double change in the 64th minute when Charlotte Turner came on to replace Laura Morris and Laura Pennington came on to replace Helen Evans.

Saints pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, when Lucy Brown intercepted a stray Lincoln pass in the centre circle and ran forward through the middle before firing her low right foot shot from 20 yards into City keeper Amy Halloran’s right hand corner.

The visitors pulled another goal back in the 73rd minute when Taylor Davis’ short corner from the left found Erin Taylor, whose right foot flick into the middle found Katie Doster, who fired her right foot shot from 5 yards into Halloran’s left hand corner to make it 4-2.

However, any hopes of a dramatic late comeback were ended deep into the 75th minute when Daisy Marsh’s low through ball on the right found Thornley, who took a touch before sending her right cross-cum-shot from 30 yards out on the right into Cleveley’s top right hand corner to make it 5-2.

Both sides made a change at the same time in the 76th minute with Zoe Griffiths coming on to replace Davis for Saints and Olivia Leslie coming on to replace Amy Blinkhorn for City.

The hosts made their final change in the 84th minute when Jess Rousseau came on to replace the injured Marsh.

With the 4th Official having indicated a minimum of 4 minutes of added to be played at the end, the final blast of referee Wayne Mason’s whistle after an eventual total of 5 minutes and 13 seconds of added time brought the game to a close.

It was a bad day at the office for Saints who put in a poor performance and they will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to Long Eaton United Ladies in the league this Sunday (kick off  2.00 p.m.).
