It’s been another exciting weekend for The New Saints’ Academy.
On Saturday our U16s travelled to Leicester City to participate in a four-team 7-a-side tournament.
As well as TNS, Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City’s International Academy from Thailand all competed. Teams played each other twice with the top two competing in the final.
We faced-off against the hosts in the first game and despite going down to an early goal, the young Saints fought back to earn a well-deserved 3-1 win.
In the second game we drew 2-2 with International Academy, before suffering back-to-back 3-2 defeats against West Brom and Leicester.
After again drawing against International Academy, it was all down to the final game against West Brom. All 4 teams were still fighting for places in the final going into the last match.
TNS produced a fantastic performance and beat the league winners 2-1 to secure a final spot.
In the final, TNS raced into an early lead but were caught out with a couple of moments of lapse in concentration which allowed the Baggies to go 3-1 in front. TNS continued to press and deserved their second goal. However, with just minutes left to play, West Brom counter attacked and put the game to bed to win the final 4-2.
“Really delighted with the players today. To face up against such good opposition and to come so close is a credit. They worked tirelessly for each other.
We went there with a game plan and executed it perfectly. We played to our strengths, disciplined off the ball and were unlucky in the final.
We just switched off a couple of times and if you do that at this level you get punished. It’s been a great learning opportunity for the players.
I’m excited to work with these lads next season as I think they are a group with huge potential.”
