An exciting Futsal season in the FAW Elite League is reaching its crescendo, write David Girvan and Andy Ratcliffe.
There was a lot for TNS Futsal to live up to, what with the illustrious history for both the Football and Futsal sectors of the club. The club’s success on the pitch is well documented, made evident with Scott Ruscoe’s outfit winning their 7th consecutive league title earlier this week. However, what many people may not know is that the Futsal wing won the inaugural FAW Futsal Cup, back in 2011. That being the tournament which the team will play in the finals day of on the 15th of April, once again.
This reincarnation of the Futsal team were aware of the tasks that lay ahead of them at the start of the season, with a difficult northern division and the challenges of establishing the Futsal Club. After a period of transition and pre-season, the team prepared for the 2017/18 league and cup.
The main aim for TNS Futsal this season was to compete in all matches and to establish themselves as a force in the league, with title challenges a goal for the long term. It was a disappointing start with consecutive losses in the first two games. After that, the team started to pull together and put in to action some of the tactics and ideas muted to them. Some positive results followed, meaning the position as the second qualifiers for the league finals day, from the Northern Division, would be decided in the final game. Unfortunately TNS lost out on that, meaning they narrowly missed out on the finals this season.
However a few weeks later, the team rallied to win in the cup. They progressed successfully through the cup competition leading to their position in the finals day being confirmed. The finals will be played in The House of Sport in Cardiff, on the 15th of April. Preparations for that are ongoing with the team focussed on their goal, although it will be a difficult challenge against three other established Futsal teams from throughout Wales.
Moving forward, the Futsal team hope to build on the success of this season. They will engage more people in the game of Futsal and will continue to make deeper links with the rest of the organisation.
