Saints Women end phase one in high scoring fashion

The New Saints Women ended Genero Adran Premier phase one with a team league record 8-0 against Pontypridd United at USW Sports Park.

Caitlin Chapman, Kay Baker, and Chantelle Teare netted braces with, Grace Dunkerley and Lexie Harrison also on the scoresheet.

Kieran Lee-Birch’s team dominated throughout the encounter and could have potentially scored more in the game, in what was The New Saints’ biggest winning league margin.

In the opening exchanges of the match, The New Saints Club Captain, Yas Evans, had a shot from distance that went narrowly wide.

Not too long later in the 11th minute, it was the Saints that had another effort, as Chantelle Teare hit the ball from 20-yards out, which was successfully gathered by Anna Phelps.

Moments on, Teare put in a great ball that Chapman connected well with from close-range, but was denied by a fine Phelps save.

Teare did open the scoring in the 19th minute, as an over the top ball from Zara Gibbs found the forward, who netted smashed the ball into the top of the net from a few yards out.

Saints soon doubled their advantage in the 21st minute, as Chapman span the ball on the edge of the 18-yard area and curled an effort beyond Phelps.

It was almost three two minutes on, as Grace Dunkerley effort on the rebound from not far out went over the crossbar.

In the 35th minute, Phelps made a couple of good saves in quick succession, firstly denying a Chapman effort from point-blank range, before Buckland had a shot from just inside the box that was stopped.

A third was scored in the 38th minute, as Chapman cross found Dunkerley at the back post, who smashed the ball into the net.

Saints got a fourth at the start of the second 45, when Chapman crossed a ball in that found substitute, Lexie Harrison, at the front post, who scored past Phelps’ bottom-left.

The fifth came 52 minutes in, as Teare played a ball back for Chapman, who struck a shot into the top of the net from just inside the penalty area.

A sixth goal came in the 64th minute, as Teare crossed a ball in that found centre-half, Kay Baker, in the box who slotted the ball in from a few yards out.

Baker got another ten minutes later thanks to a Yas Evans cross that found the the 29-year-old at the back host, who headed the ball into the net.

There was an eighth goal in the 80th minute, when Kelsey Richardson played an excellent ball through to Teare, and the number nine slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner from a few yards out to bring an end to the action.

TNS are next in action in the Bute Energy Welsh Cup quarter-finals against Cardiff City at Leckwith Stadium on Sunday, February 9th.
